THE SECRET TO RAISING RESILIENCE IN YOUR CHILD

Many parents, including myself, want the same thing: to raise children who are resilient, confident, and able to thrive in the real world. But resilience doesn’t just happen, it’s built. And what I’ve learned through years of studying psychology, trauma, and parenting is this: the key to resilience lies in how we, as adults, deal with emotions.

For many of us, emotions are complicated. Peter Walker, author of The Tao of Fully Feeling, points out that billions of people were raised by emotionally unavailable parents parents who simply didn’t know what to do with feelings. As a result, many children never learned how to feel emotions fully. Walker describes it powerfully: those unfelt emotions don’t disappear, they become “ghosts” that haunt us later in life. They show up as anxiety, overworking, overeating, or that constant restlessness you can’t quite shake.

This connects deeply with what Marisa Peer, bestselling author and world-renowned hypnotherapist, teaches. She often says that beneath most struggles her clients bring, there are three core beliefs: I’m not enough, what I want isn’t available, and I’m different. These wounds often come from unmet childhood needs—to be seen, to be heard, and to be understood without condition.

Jennifer Kolari, child and family therapist and author of Connected Parenting, adds another crucial insight. She teaches that one of the greatest gifts we can give our children is to be fully present with them, without rushing to fix their problems or push our agenda. In other words, we must let them feel their emotions fully, even the difficult ones.

But here’s the challenge: if we, as parents, were never taught how to sit with our own feelings, how can we hold that space for our children? Many of us sweep away emotions, sadness, disappointment, anger because they feel inconvenient or overwhelming. Sometimes we over-solve. Other times we ignore. Not because we don’t love our children, but because no one ever showed us how to do it differently.

And it’s no wonder. For the last hundred years, industrial society rewarded productivity, efficiency, and constant growth. Emotions didn’t fit that model. They were seen as messy, inefficient, even wasteful. But the cost of pushing emotions aside is now clear: we’re raising generations who struggle with anxiety, disconnection, and the weight of suppressed feelings.

The good news is that it’s never too late to change this cycle. When we learn to feel our own emotions fully, we model resilience for our children. When we give them space to sit with their feelings without fixing, without rushing, we give them the gift of emotional strength.

This is the bridge I see so clearly: parenting is not only about raising our children. It’s also about re-raising our inner child—healing the wounds we carry, so we can show up with presence, empathy, and grounded strength for the children we love.
